Lesníkova studánka/Forester’s well

Our trip in seeking of a well starts at the information center. From the observation terrace we can first admire valley in the direction to the Metuje River. Behind us the ancient tower of Zázvorka grows, which remained here as a remnant of the Regional Gate. We walk towards the Hus square. Just behind the shop with sports equipment we turn left along tourist signs and pass through Zadomí, from where there are nice views of the river valley as well as the arenaceous massive. We go through a passage next to the municipal museum and we find ourselves in nicely adapted Hilden Atrium. We continue along the marked tourist path and on the left hand we can see a repaired parsonage garden house. We stop at the sculpture of the founder of our town, Jan Černčický of Kácov, and along the Church of the Holy Trinity we continue through Zadomí as far as the place where the Mountain Gate stood some time ago We are below the square and we have another possibility to look out of the observation terrace over rests of vineyards at the valley of the Metuje River.

Forester’s well

We continue down along the street Českých bratří and after ca five minutes we’ll notice about 500 years old yew-tree on the left hand, the oldest tree in the Nové Město region. On our right hand then we pass by St. John of Nepomuk Chapel. We go across the Sepský Bridge and we continue along the yellow tourist sign to Klopotovská street. Having passed by a complex of company buildings we turn right after ca 200 m to the forest paths leading to the Klopotovské Valley, which takes us round the preserve with boars and deer, Čertova díra (Devil’s Hole) as far as Lesníkova studánka (Forester’s Well).

Well on the Goose Neck - detail

We continue down along the street Českých bratří and after ca five minutes we’ll notice about 500 years old yew-tree on the left hand, the oldest tree in the Nové Město region. On our right hand then we pass by St. John of Nepomuk Chapel. We go across the Sepský Bridge and we mount up along the road and after ca 150 m we turn along the red tourist sign to the right, taking a gentle staircase. On the top we notice a cross of the Lord’s Supper and the red sign will take us along the asphalt road to the main road and beginning of the village Spy. Behind the first house, which has an inscription L. P. 1914 (A.D. 1914) in the gable we turn to the field road to the left, which takes us to the edge of the forest. We continue along this road to the valley of the Janovský Brook and we pass through a mangnificent quiet valley, which in recent past was used for a local military post as a shooting range. After ca 15-minute walk upstream the Janovský Brook we can reach the final destination of our walk, a newly adapted Well on the Goose Neck. From here we can continue along the red tourist sign, which takes us to the water reservoir Zákraví. We can mount up along the metalled road to the village of the same name and from here along the road over the Hill of ®ďára we return back to Nové Město nad Metují. Even before descending to the Metuje River we stop at the observation spot on the Hill of ®ďára, from which we can see one of the most beautiful views of the town – Český Betlém.

St. Barbara’s Well

Our trip in seeking the well starts at the information center. From the observation terrace we can first enjoy view of the valley of the Metuje River. Behind us the ancient tower of Zázvorka grows, which remained here as a remnant of the Regional Gate. We can walk to the town and immediately on the right we notice the sculpture of St. John of Nepomuk. Below it, on the rocky promontory above the river there has been standing the sculpture Allegory of Metuje by the academic sculptor Olbram Zoubek since October 2006. We come to the market, nowadays Náměstí Republiky square. Our sight can hardly miss a dominant of this square, which is a monument devoted to citizens of Nové Město – victims of the World War I. Here we take a sharp turn to the right and start to descend stairs. High, stony retaining wall of the building, at which we took this sharp turn to the right, was originally the Nové Město jail. Sidewalk will take us to the bridge, on which we turn to the left and mount up behind the river towards Jestřebí, to Hradčany. Here, opposite the vocational school at the tourist signpost we turn among houses to the right and we continue along the tourists signs (and in fact along the Nové Město ring). After ca 200 meters we get to a bench, where a small turning for a monumental place is – this is where in 1919 a linden-tree was planted in order to commemorate Master John Hus and where, two years later, also a big stone with the embossment of chalice was placed. After a rest we can go back to the tourist path, and we continue following a contour line along the forest path. The path will take us under Studýnka and below the Kafka’s Rock we descend to the Palvát’s Meadow. In its back part we pass by a small bathing pool and we cross the Libchyňský Brook across the footbridge. From here we can mount up along less distinct path in the forest to Rezek. After having surmounted a steep super elevation we are in the final destination of our trip.
